The Bottom Billion - Essay Example Collier writes that ‘the countries at the bottom coexist with the 21st century, but their reality is the 14th century: civil war, plague, ignorance’. Collier has studied for decades about the countries, their struggles and their efforts to escape poverty. He wrote the book with a compilation of a lifetime’s findings and technical research. The book focuses on the billions of people who are facing problems because of the never ending poverty (Quinn 1). In this book, Collier has based his research on the hard-headed analysis of the cost-benefits rather than emotional aspects or post colonial guilt. He has talked with facts and the calculations for instance the cost of the badly governed diminishing state and its neighbours is the loss of the economic growth of about $100bn. In this situation, it seems like a bargain to spend a few million dollars on skilled administrators for government support, infrastructure projects and sending troops to put down rebellions. Collier’s findings have overturned the persistent myths about the failure that Africa is facing for decades. He finds that the history of failure and civil wars is not because of the poor politicians or restless populace, but because of poverty. So he states that all countries that are poor and low income face about 14 per cent chances of entering in a civil war during a five year period. Collier writes that the young men who are recruited by the rebel armies are cheap in an environment of immense poverty. Hence, joining the rebel movements give these young men a minor chance of riches (Collier 57). The four poverty traps described in the book includes conflict as the first. Conflict is a trap which cannot be escaped without the help of global aid and support. Other three traps are landlocked with bad or poor neighbours, natural resources abundant and bad governance. Example is that of Switzerland which is landlocked but its neighbours Germany and Italy have giant markets and they are able to sell their goods to rich consumers, whereas Uganda is landlocked but it has neighbours such as Sudan and Somalia that are failed states. Abundant natural resources mean economic boon but in poor countries, these resources mean encouragement for corrupt politicians to snatch power and make economies vulnerable whether it is the oil discovery, copper or diamonds (Saucier 2). Bad governance is a trap which can be seen in Africa and because of which Africa has become disreputable. Countries that are not landlocked and are on the coast can be lucky with the large workforce and for them governance wouldn’t matter much. If the state doesn’t come in the way, growth from exports can take off. However, for countries that are landlocked, the economy is dependent on air-flows or on the revenues from natural resources hence governance is critical. In such countries if bad governance is present, the country can continue to fail. Collier has given the example of Chad where the cash that has to be spent on government healthcare sector, is disappeared even before it reaches the hospitals. This book overall addresses the poorest billion people in the world, most of who are in Africa. Collier has analyzed about 58 countries in this world that harbour the poorest people. From the distance, I see like in a tunnel people dancing and drinking; a party. In the woods?! Like a tornado I feel absorbed and transposed by the dark light in that devilish world and the party becomes my reality oh no, where did the forest go? My love?! Dont leave me! The heat. The noise. The lights. The sounds were an apocalypse of evil. I look at my palm. Drugs. Everything was a hallucination, a frenzy I look around and all I see is people with evil smiles, blinded by the discos lights. As I turn my head round, I see a painting on the wall. No, it cant be but yes! Its her! This cant be a dream! Her white dress, hypnotic smile and her pink hair with daffodils and the trees, moaning in the winds wild breath. I approach and I feel how my heart struggles to reject the feeling of the pleasant pain of love which surrounds every inch of my being. Shaking, I hold out her and as my hand sinks into the painting I realize it is real! As I step on the cold floor of my bathroom, trying to brush my teeth, I almost put soap on my toothbrush During my journey to school, I remember the weird dream I had, meanwhile the sun warms up my dreary face as the luring vanilla scent of the car tempts me to go back in the world of dreams, where nothing is impossible I arrived. As I approach my classroom, from the crowded mass, a new face catches my attention. A boy. Short, black straightened hair, round eyes. I dont think Ive seen him before. He is gorgeous. His appearance paralyses me as Im pushed over by the crowd. He fills the emptiness in my heart. His gestures are so perfectly surreal and full of everything I never had and always wanted I want him so bad In my desperate longing I feel a wave of painful hot tears of silence that reflect his image into my eyes. Is there a certain concern you have for your community and would like to help out? You can always do something someone has don before and continue their project. These are all things to help you think of an idea. There are so many places you can look in order to find an idea. The ideas are innumerable and there is always s omeplace and someone who needs help. Some examples may help you understand the ideas of what to do for your project. Once example is starting a bingo night at an elder care or children's home. It is an easy task that many people do and that all people love. If someone in your family was in a orphanage, you could as a local orphanage how you could help. Tragedies are always occurring, and you could help raise money for a relief organization. If you are starting a community service project for a club at school, you could always do an activity within the school like monthly teacher appreciation or a weekly tutoring session. There are so many paths you can take when building a trail of community service projects.

1.2 Younger people with dementia diagnoses may still be employed have children and a family and it can be a lot more distressing for them when diagnosed than someone who is older, they have a better awareness of what is coming and what is going to happen, and older person may not realise they have dementia at first, and out it down to Age, and by the time they are diagnosed they have had it for some time so the trauma is not so severe and they don’t have dependents to worry about, so the experiences can be quite different. 1.3 People with disabilities are more prone to developing dementia at an earlier age that people who have no disability, although the symptoms may be similar and they may not get the correct diagnosis or be able to understand the diagnosis. Different Ethnic Groups may have a lower awareness of dementias and they are more prone to having more than one type of dementia linked in with medical problems and this can delay diagnosis, so they are not getting the support they need early on, There is also a stigma in some cultures, thinking they are possessed they are locked up with no treatment and sometimes even killed, so it can be difficult to breach this barrier making their experiences more harrowing. It can also make it difficult to present their needs culturally as their history may not be in this country so person centred approaches can be difficult for them. End of life can mean that they have been diagnosed with dementia for some time and if there is no plan in place for palliative care, or they have not already detailed their needs then the support they get at end of life might not be what they want, they will lack understanding of what is happening and this can distress the family members. Having a good plan in plac e reduces this, so people with dementia at end of life still have their needs, wishes and preferences respected and reduce the distress caused. Read more: Principles of diversity equality and inclusion essay 1.4 A carer may become distressed, frustrated, lack sleep become depressed, dementia is a full time job, they become confused, don’t remember people who are family members, and they will eventually forget the basics of life, this can be very distressing watching a family member with dementia as they are  not recognising their children, partners ect. It is not a slow process and this affects their well-being. 2.1. The current legislation The Equality Act, The Human Rights Act and the equality and diversity policies in place all reflect what is in the agreed ways of working in the plans and policies and procedures. This makes sure that the client is always at the centre of planning and the support they receive, they are encouraged to make decisions and given the choices that are reflected in the support plans, making sure they are included, they are offered outings and encouraged to be a part of the communities they live in, this promoted inclusive practices and promotes the c lients themselves. 2.2 Because they lack understanding, they have lost their memories and the basics of life skills, this makes them very vulnerable to people thinking they are acting in their best interests, it also makes them targets for people who would want to exploit them as they have forgotten what money they had, they have been convinced to give them power of attorney, they may become reliant on their carers who keep them isolated in their homes and make excuses. 2.3 The person with dementia may feel depressed, lost, not understand what is happening, they may not realise what is happening until the damage is done and then not understand why it happened causing them to become very distressed, feel isolated, let down, it all feels strange and upsetting. 2.4 Diversity, equality and inclusion are the differences between us all in our religious beliefs, cultural needs, preferences, they are addressed by learning about their histories, their past, what they need in the religious beliefs cultural needs from diet, to clothing, support, who supports them, the activities they take part in, by having individual plans in place that reflect their individual needs and preferences, by making sure they are involved in the planning and reviewing processes all of their individual needs can be met. 4.3 I would explain to them how the individual might feel, what effect this can have on them. I would also report it to the Manager immediately so training and support can be put in place for them, this is all recorded in the staff files and it is monitored so it doesn’t happen again. We promote inclusive practices and the client is always involved in choices and decisions no one should work in any other way.

The No Child Left Behind Act - 903 Words

A lot has changed ever since George W. Bush signed the No Child Left behind Act in 2002. Since this act was signed, the quality of our children’s education has gotten better, money in the school system is being spent smarter, and the amount of standardized testing has been increased. Although the No Child Left behind Act was believed to better education and the schooling system in America, many believe that since the act was signed the school system has actually gotten worse. One of the main reasons that it is believed the school system has worsened is because of the major increase of standardized testing. The No Child Left behind Act has made the yearly testing required in all schools. In Colorado the standardized state testing occurs every year in March. The student used to be required to take part in state issued tests from third grade to tenth. This has recently changed. The student must still start in third grade but is required to take the test until at least the sophomo re year of high school or until the required courses for the test are tested over. The government should cut down on the amount of standardized tests in K-12 schools. Fewer tests would allow teachers to focus on teaching what is necessary for the student to learn, to spend class time more wisely, and to provide less stress.
